Tychicus will give you a full report about how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper who serves with me in the Lord’s work. I am also sending Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, one of your own people. Saturday 10 May
Colossians 4:7,9
You learn a lot about people through the way they speak about others. I love how Paul speaks so warmly of his friends. Tychicus was clearly someone he trusted completely and who gave Paul wonderful support in his ministry. He is mentioned five times in the New Testament and always receives glowing praise from Paul. In his second letter to Timothy, we learn that the apostle sent Tychicus to take over from Timothy in Ephesus so that Timothy could be released to spend some time with Paul before his death.
It’s vital that we all have people we can trust completely. That’s fundamental to the way in which the Church, the body of Christ, works. Like Paul, we need to celebrate those who stand shoulder to shoulder with us. I thank God for the trustworthy people who have been a blessing to me throughout my ministry. Some have had high-profile roles and their contribution has been clear for all to see, but many others have quietly got on with the work God has called them to do. I thank God for all of them, and for the blessing they have been to my life.
The family of God includes all kinds of people, and I am so glad that Paul referred to Onesimus. We get to know this man better in Paul’s letter to Philemon. Onesimus was a slave and something had gone wrong in his relationship with Philemon, his master, and he had run away to Rome, where Paul met him. Wonderfully, Onesimus became a follower of Christ, so here Paul identified him as a faithful and beloved brother. There must have been plenty of raised eyebrows from the Colossian Christians when they read that, but everything had now changed because he had become a Christian brother.
As we serve God, we should not only thank him for those who have proved to be faithful and dependable over the years, but also remember that he is continually bringing new people into his family.
QUESTION
If you had been in the church in Colossae, how do you think you would have responded to the news that Onesimus had become a Christian?
PRAYER
Loving God, thank you for the gift of faithful brothers and sisters within your Church. Help me to always be faithful and encouraging to them. Amen

Psalm 108 is written about the time when David was being pursued by his enemies. Remember the 'rugged place' you're in or you believe the church is in (see the note for October 31)? Talk with God about how things are now.

Bible passage: Psalm 108
Psalm 108
A song. A psalm of David.
1 God, my heart feels secure.
I will sing and make music to you with all my heart.
2 Harp and lyre, wake up!
I want to sing and make music before the sun rises.
3 Lord, I will praise you among the nations.
I will sing about you among the people of the earth.
4 Great is your love. It is higher than the heavens.
Your truth reaches to the skies.
5 God, may you be honored above the heavens.
Let your glory be over the whole earth.
6 Save us. Help us with your powerful right hand,
so that those you love may be saved.
7 God has spoken from his temple.
He has said, "I will win the battle.
Then I will divide up the land around Shechem.
I will divide up the Valley of Succoth.
8 Gilead belongs to me. So does the land of Manasseh.
Ephraim is the strongest tribe. It is like a helmet for my head.
Judah is the royal tribe. It is like a ruler's staff.
9 Moab serves me like one who washes my feet.
I toss my sandal on Edom to show that I own it.
I shout to Philistia that I have won the battle."
10 Who will bring me to the city that has high walls around it?
Who will lead me to the land of Edom?
11 God, isn't it you, even though you have now turned away from us?
Isn't it you, even though you don't lead our armies into battle anymore?
12 Help us against our enemies.
The help people give doesn't amount to anything.
13 With your help we will win the battle.
You will walk all over our enemies.

Text: Main point
David remembers who God is and what he's like, and looks forward to being rescued. Imagine him getting out his lyre and strumming along as he sings!
But he doesn't let his tough predicament get him down. He's full of praise for his Lord who parcels out land for all tribes and peoples (vs 7-9).
He, not the warring, conquering nations, is the one who has everything under control. Isaiah needed to remind God's people in exile of the same thing (Isaiah 40:15).
Strengthened by this assurance about God, David heads for the strong city (v 10). He doesn't sit back and revel in God's love for him - after being under attack he's now fighting back. He's certain of the partnership he has with the Lord (v 13).

Text: Respond
Use verses 3 and 4 to thank God that it is only by his grace that we belong to him and are kept safe. Ask for his help now to move on in faith as his servant.
